I am Abbi Kenny, a young artist, and painter. Currently, I am based part-time in both Providence, Rhode Island and Bedford, Massachusetts. A rising senior at the Rhode Island School of Design, I am majoring in painting with a concentration in art history. As an artist born, raised, and living in New England, it often is the backdrop for my artistic inquiries into quotidian activities.
My artistic practice exists between the divisions of painting and drawing. They are, for me, one indistinguishably connected practice. I am involved in strengthening the relationship between my drawings, collages, and paintings by investigating more approaches to manipulating paint. My recent works focus on representations of people and their spaces. In these, I have been experimenting with composing space and surface: specifically spaces that can be an intimate portrait of the person or people inhabiting it. I am more engaged in making “passive” scenes, which portray narrative through the condition and placement of objects rather than the explicit actions of the characters within it. With my artworks, I am considering what stories the remnants of daily life and interactions tell, such as the ways history and politics embed themselves in contemporary experiences. While approaching my subjects, I am committed to cultivating a conscious and sympathetic perspective. I am a curious person and artist and enjoy problem-solving. In my painting practice, I aim to expand my painter’s “toolbox” and broaden my approach to best uniquely demonstrate my subjects. Artists I am currently looking at include Patrick Caulfield, Mickalene Thomas, Willem de Kooning, R.B. Kitaj, and Lois Dodd, among many others.
